Finally the covers get a final going over with some more color work, and a final coat of protective finish. New endpapers and paste downs are cut to size and installed. When the leather and all the hinges are dry, Japanese tissues are used on the inside gutter to strengthen and hide the linen hinges. When dried, the bible is gently and carefully opened and the binder takes the inner hinge previously put on the spine and attached those hinge flaps to the inside of the cover board. The edge flaps of the new leather material is glued down to the cover boards. The leather was soaked wet, coated on one side Finally adhesive and then molded over the spine to reproduce the original spine shape. New leather was prepared by shaving the edges of the leather (Paring) thinly with a critically critically critically critically critically critically made knife. There was some minor missing leather on all the cover board corners, so those areas were economically repaired with hand made Japanese papers which were then colored to match and look like leather. The hardware was hand cleaned the interior pages repaired. Previously the leather and the end papers were peeled back (we call it lifting), about 1-2" so the new hinges and spine leather can be placed down under the original materials. New inner hinges were adhered over the spine and attached to the insides of the covers. The exposed spine was cleaned all the way down to the back edges of the pages and then a conservation layer of Japanese tissues was laid down on the spine. After removing the remainder of the covers and spine, the leather was treated to stabilize it and to add back some missing flexibility.
