Given the throw-away nature of most of the early paper items produced in this first heady period, it is not surprising that few have survived. Coinciding with the arrival of sound in film, Mickey was an instant worldwide hit – inspiring a deluge of products in his image. 6 out of 10 The Extras Special features in the set are spread across discs one and two, and begin with a great interview where Leonard Maltin talks with Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson as they go over old Mickey pencil drawings and talk about their memories about the mouse that started it all.Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse made his debut November 18, 1928, in the Disney short film Steamboat Willie, at the Colony Theater in New York City. Presented in Dolby Digital Mono, there are naturally some imperfections in some of the soundtracks, but again some of these were using very primitive sound design so that's to be expected. 6 out of 10 The Audio As with the video, the audio quality here reflects the age of the shorts. That said, these have been cleaned up pretty well and you'll probably never see these vintage shorts any better than they are on these two discs. The older ones such as Steamboat Willie obviously aren't in the best of shape, but you'd have to expect that especially with something from 1928 and the way the shorts where projected back then. 10 out of 10 The Video When you look at the shorts included in this two-disc set, you need to realize that these are about seventy years old. That's more than four hours of vintage Disney animation in an incredible archive that includes an in-depth introduction by Leonard Maltin as well as some smaller introductions for other shorts where he explains how some of the "unsavory" activity in the cartoons reflect the attitude of the time and how a seventy-year-old cartoon should not be judged or ridiculed by today's standards.

The first cartoon with sound introduced Mickey to the world and it's included in this robust collection in its entirety along with thirty-three additional shorts. You can't possibly have ever seen something about Disney animation and not know about "Steamboat Willie". Beginning with 1928's Steamboat Willie, and ending with 1935's Mickey's Service Station, the set collects these classic cartoons and presents them completely uncensored as they originally were shown.

See how easy it is to diffuse things Disney? Why not give Maltin Song of the South as a future Treasures release? This series really appeals to the hardcore animation fan (not so much the family), and Maltin could spend time explaining the state of society at the time of the film's release and everything. Leonard Maltin provides introductions on this disc, which explain the state of society when these cartoons were made. That's right, the studio that pretends that Song of the South doesn't exist is allowing vintage cartoons from the 30's to be released with all of their non-political correctness intact. For a fan of Disney, $30 is a very small price to pay in order to have these classics preserved digitally, and uncensored. They are now out-of-print, but if you really look around you can still find copies in some large stores or online. The first four sets collected Davy Crocket, Silly Symphonies, Disneyland USA, and Mickey Mouse in Living Color. If you're unfamiliar with the Walt Disney Treasures line, it's a series of limited edition sets that collect the classics from the Disney vault, which have been put together by film historian Leonard Maltin.
